Red X on Windows 7 network ICON but internet access works

After trying several things, this fixed the problem for me:

1. Open the Registry Editor (click start, type run, type regedit)

2. Browse to:
      HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Classes\Local       Settings\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\TrayNotify

3. Delete the data of the following keys in this folder (They will “reappear” after reboot):

4. Open Task Manager.
      Click to the process tab.
      Kill every explorer.exe process
(req’d because explorer.exe has a backup copy of the keys in the RAM and writes them back to the registry on shutdown)
Click application tab of the Task Manager.
      Press “New Task”.
      Type “explorer.exe” and press [Enter].
